weight loss plateau

Well, I hit my plateau a few weeks back and I am still struggling to get past it. The plateau I am speaking of is the one where you can’t seem to lose another pound… a weight loss plateau. I started off strong, quickly lost 10lbs, and then NOTHING!!! The frustration is enough to drive you mad. I have not changed my routine, I am still eating healthy, but not a pound has fallen from the scale.

Why does this happen? Here’s the easiest explanation; my body has become used to my workouts and my food intake, so it does not feel it has to work any harder to burn calories. So, how do we get it going again? Below are 5 steps to get our bodies revved up and our metabolisms moving again!

1. Start circuit training

These short bursts of resistance exercises use moderate weights and frequent repetitions, followed quickly by another burst of exercise targeting a different muscle group. This in turn helps speed up your metabolism. You can find several beginning circuit training workouts on YouTube. Here’s one of my favorites:

2. Change how you eat

For example if you’re eating your protein in the morning, switch and eat it in the afternoon. Also, add more fruits and veggies to your diet. This can help you eat a little less than normal and might be just the push you need.

3. Drink more water

Drinking water can curb your appetite and increase your metabolism helping you burn more calories and hurl you over that weight-loss wall.

4. Eat more

The biggest misconception is that skipping meals will help us lose weight faster. NO! It will not, it will actually do quite the opposite. When you skip meals you slow your metabolism down even more; so try to eat at least 5 to 6 small meals a day to keep blood sugar and hunger in perspective.

5. Talk to your doc

Lastly, if you have increased your workouts, kept to a strict diet, and you’re several months in and the pounds are not shedding it might be time to see your Doctor. One culprit stopping women from reaching their weight- loss goals is hormone imbalance. Do not immediately assume this is the problem, but if you have truly tried everything else, it might be worth going to the Doc for a simple blood test to at least rule it out.

What are some of the changes you have made to get your weight loss started again?

I had this problem a while back, and i ended up having hyperthyroid. I think a lot of people who haven’t heard about it don’t think about it when there is problems with weight.

I love this article. One of the first pieces of advice I give clients or just friends is to start circuit training. I feel like so many times people just stick to the basics. Many never want to go outside their Comfort Zone. The other piece is to EAT MORE! I get the change how you eat and many people try to put that to work, but so many people DO NOT get EATING MORE! They believe in that misconception like you wrote about above and they are afraid to eat. This is a great read and sounds advice for anyone that wants to get over that wall!
