We all know that in order to lose fat, we need to cut fat from our diet. Eating too much fat causes us to get fat. Right? Right. Well…. maybe not. For thirty years or so, we’ve been told that low fat is the way to go. But that may not be the case.
The independent government committee, Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessment, recently conducted a two year review of 16,000 dietary and nutritional research studies and has released their new dietary recommendations that they call LCHF (Low Carb High Fat). For a lot of us, this is completely mind blowing. Especially since for most of our lives we’ve been taught to fear fat. But perhaps there’s nothing to fear after all.
The research committee consisted of 10 doctors, many of whom were skeptics of low-carbohydrate diets and backers of the low fat recommendations. However after their review, they are now recommending that people give up their carbohydrates as well as their low fat ways and instead include butter, bacon, olive oil, and even full fat dairy into their diets.
The reasoning behind finding low fat as unhealthy is simple. When food manufacturers remove fat from food, they have to make that food taste just as good as the full fat version. The way they do that is by adding sugar. Yes, sugar. So, if you think you’re being good by skipping that candy bar and instead reaching for a low fat yogurt, you’re not really making a much better choice.
The new Swedish dietary guidelines are very similar to what the Atkins diet recommends, and even specifically state that 20-40% of a person’s daily calories should be from carbohydrates in the form of fruits and vegetables. The council found that low fat diets are harmful for heart health and that it’s time to start adding back the butter, cream, and healthy animal fats that we’ve been cutting out.
