How to Start a Weight Loss Routine

Looking to start a weight loss routine this year? There are a few things you need to know! Not every weight loss routine is the same, and certainly there are pros and cons to each weight loss routine, but there are a few tips for starting a weight loss routine that can immensely help with your success!

1. Pick your weight loss routine

First, pick a weight loss routine that is reasonable and healthy. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different diet plans and meals plans out there that are dangerously unhealthy. It’s important to remember that slow loss is the most maintainable and the healthiest way to go about weight loss. Restricting yourself too much or being too drastic can cause lasting damage to your body – so treat it like a temple!

2. Calories are good

The next thing to remember is that calories are not your enemy. Calories are a source of energy for your body, although they’ve gotten a bad reputation. Making sure you fill your body with healthy calories is what is important! Note that 1600 calories of fast food and 1600 calories of healthy, wholesome foods are completely different. Keeping within a normal range is important. There are tons of calculators online to determine where you need to be based on weight, height, and physical activity. Find out where you should be and try to stay in that range!

3. Track what you eat

Using a calorie counter like MyFitnessPal can be extremely beneficial when you first start a weight loss routine. Not only does it measure calories, but you can look at the macronutrients you’re consuming to see if you need to eat more or less protein, fat, and carbohydrates. You can also add friends to help with accountability if you like that! Not every weight loss routine requires calorie counting, but most of them have a pretty specific breakdown of what type of foods to eat and apps like MyFitnessPal can definitely help your understanding of that.

4. Find what motivates you

Lastly, it’s important to find some motivation and dedication to your plan. Sit down and think about why this is important to you.  Dig deep and move past the obvious areas like your looks and being “skinny,” try to ignore all of that. Ask yourself what really drives you to want to start a weight loss routine. Now, write it down and hang it everywhere! Hang your reason on the bathroom mirror, on the fridge door, and anywhere else that you can think where you will see it daily. Weight loss routines can be hard, but keeping a positive motivation in sight all the time is extremely helpful!
